しかしそんなある日、密偵が調査に入った可能性があるという報告を耳にする。
公儀隠密なのか、あるいは年貢高で幕府の覚えめでたい左門を妬んで足を引っ張ろうとする何者かの差し金か。
もし民衆の中に密告者がいるなら、ひっ捕らえて見せしめにせねばなるまい───。
「───お代官様、ここはひとつ罠を仕掛けてみては？」
「密偵を炙り出そうというのか？」
「左様でございます───下手に隠そうとするより、むしろ堂々と悪事を働いてやれば黙ってはいられますまい」
「確かに・・・しっかり網を張って逃さぬようにすれば済む話ではあるな」
「密告者を募るのも良さそうですな───そのための資金繰りは、無論私めにお任せいただければ」
「フフフ、よかろう───そちも悪よのぅ、大黒屋」

自らの安寧を守るため、左門はさっそく利兵衛と共に計画を練り始めた───。
