The story follows a man who has spent most of his adult life rebuilding himself after repeated personal and emotional collapses. Some were caused by his own mistakes; others came from relationships ending in disaster. Each time he rebuilt, he tried to create a life that was more stable, more deliberate, and less vulnerable than the one before. Eventually, he believed he had finally found the life and love that would endure.That illusion is shattered when a catastrophic earthquake devastates where he and the woman he loves live. During the chaos he's told she died in the destruction.He remains in the ruins of his home and life for six months — long enough to close the final chapters of his former life, fulfill his responsibilities, help stabilize the community, and resolve every obligation tying him to the place.
