This allows for easy extraction of only the things I want to find. Normally I use a relatively brute force method, basically if any Japanese text is detected, take the whole string. Poison used a rather complicated note function to encode the character biographies on the status screen. For that, instead of taking the whole string, I decided to just take the Japanese text out of the note and replace just that. In doing that, I discovered that U+30FC ( ー ) KATAKANA-HIRAGANA PROLONGED SOUND MARK is not included as a uniquely Japanese character. In trying to figure out why this obviously Japanese character wasn't included in my Regex, I found the answer in Unicode.org documentation on anomalies in the scripting classification. It's just a weird one! It's also key to the Ashley family name being written in Japanese.There is a character named パン which transliterates to Pan but translates to Bread. I didn't catch this in my initial assignment of reference materials, so Gemini dutifully translated パン as Bread all across the game. I think I scrubbed all 'Bread' references from the game, but in case someone in conversation with Pan refers to them as Bread, you know why.
