Shuusaku - DVD-ROM Edition (v1.0en) by Elf

The girls' dormitory of Shukusei Music Academy is home to some of the most talented young female musicians in Japan.
In such an elite school, appearances count for everything, but behind closed doors the sounds of screams, whimpers, and dull moans can be heard echoing through the halls. The school handy-man, Shuusaku, cleans up after the girls and picks up all their dirty secrets, which he uses to blackmail them into some very un-ladylike private performances.
Shuusaku may get paid to clean up the building, but his true calling is just the opposite- sexually defiling and disgracing the innocent and high-strung musical maestros.​

This has been, without a doubt, the most tedious and exhausting project I've ever worked on.
The game engine Elf used was built specifically for this DVD version of Shuusaku, meaning no existing tools supported it. I tried everything I could find, and nothing worked — until I got some tools from Zus (of the Assenheim project), who had done the Russian translation. But those were built for the CD version and came without source code, so they didn't work either.
From there, I had no choice but to reverse engineer the entire engine from scratch — the file formats, compression algorithms, image formats, and packing algorithms. That alone took a significant amount of time. The biggest roadblock was the GPX image format; I couldn't get the engine to accept my recreated images, and that single problem held me up for a long time on its own.
On top of that, I had to resize the text box graphics and then modify hardcoded engine logic to accept the new dimensions and render four lines of text properly. That step alone took roughly a month.
It's been a long road, but the game is finally running.
